16 year old Assistant Coach Elena Rose has won the ‘Young Volunteer of the Year Award’ at the Sport Guildford Awards. Read on to find out the latest news…
The nominees for the Sport Guildford Awards were invited to a special evening on Thursday 14th November where the winners were announced. This was a celebration of local sporting talent from players through to coaches, volunteers and sporting organisations across the borough and celebrated a diverse array of sports including rowing, karate and of course gymnastics. Sport Guildford hosted the event in partnership with Guildford Borough Council. Special guests included Olympic champion Liam Heath MBE and Eagle Radio Presenter Beverley Hunter.
ELENA WINS AWARD AND MEETS OLYMPIAN CANOEIST LIAM HEATH MBE
Elena Rose is delighted to be have been named the winner for her category. Winners from last night’s event will go forward to Active Surrey’s county level roadshow, where judges will decide who deserves the honour of being named the best in Surrey. Those county level winners will be celebrated locally in their community during January and February 2020.
Elena began her gymnastics adventures with Flair at the age of 11 at Club Guildford Spectrum. Her natural flair and ability matched with her strong work ethic helped her to improve quickly as she worked her way through the award syllabus. Within a couple of terms Elena was chosen to become a member of the Display Squad Team. As a member of the squad she improved her tumbling and acrobatic skills and also learned what it was like to work as a member of a team and how to support each other as you learn new skills together.
ELENA WITH SAM ARCHER & THE SPECTRUM COACHES ON A DAY OUT AT THE ICE RINK
Elena’s Lead Coach Sam Archer spotted her potential and suggested that Elena became a Volunteer Assistant Coach in March 2016 just before her 13th birthday. Elena jumped at the chance. Being a Volunteer Assistant Coach Elena was able to learn how to coach gymnastics skills and how to work with the coaching team under the guidance of her Lead Coach and mentor Sam Archer. She was also trained to deliver spectacular service at the Flair Necessities Training Day delivered by Founder & CEO Richard Dwyer.
Elena excelled as a Volunteer Assistant Coach from 2016 until 2019 and this has led her to be selected for a role on the coaching team which she started in September 2019. She is a positive role model to all the young gymnasts that she inspires and enjoys supporting them as they develop their skills and confidence. Elena especially enjoys helping the children to progress at the Special Educational Needs and Disability gymnastics classes.

Elena’s mum, Katerina Rose said, “I have loved seeing my daughter grow in confidence as both a gymnast and a coach over the years. Elena’s ability and interest in sport from a young age has inspired her to follow a career as a sports physiotherapist and Elena is now studying for her BTEC in Sport as well as Psychology and English A Levels. She also belongs to a girls football team and will always be very passionate about her gymnastics.”
