An expert parent’s opinion on keeping your children active through the half term holiday

I’m always interested in listening to lots of different expert parent’s opinions on education, sport and lifestyle, be it conventional or slightly more unconventional like blogger Lucinda Dawes. Last year Lucinda pulled her children out of school and set off to travel the world. What an adventure!

She blogs about her travels at ‘How To Travel With Kids’ and has an online fitness business called ‘The Secret Body Coach.’ I took some time to find out more about her and her family.

Hello Lucinda. Tell us who your family are? “My husband’s name is Alan and we have two sons – Joshua who is 12 years old and Jacob who is 6 years old.”

How long have you been home schooling your children? “We deregistered both boys in July last year but we did home educate Josh for a year when he was younger too. I was also home educated as a child so it wasn’t especially new for our family.”

What are the best things about home schooling? “We’re able to tailor the boys education around their specific needs and abilities. We don’t have to follow the national curriculum or stick to school hours so we’re free to learn about the things that interest them, when it interests them. I also feel that the National Curriculum is out of date and is teaching things that are no longer relevant whilst missing many things that are now essential. Home schooling allows us to address this in our own way.”

What are your favourite things to do with your family? We love going out and exploring new places. Castles, mountains and beaches being a big favourite. We’re also big movie fans too so we often visit the cinema (when we’re in an English speaking country!).”

What are Joshua’s hobbies? Josh likes adventure sports like rock climbing, kayaking and freerunning. Pretty much anything that makes me as his mother nervous! He also loves Minecraft and Roblox.”

What are Jacob’s hobbies? Jake also enjoys freerunning and has recently learned to swim and ride his bike. He spends hours playing Lego.”

How long have you been travelling and where are you going next? “We left the UK in January. We’re currently in Croatia, doing a road trip through the whole country. Then we’re heading back to the UK for a quick visit before we leave for Thailand, Cambodia & Vietnam.”

Do you have any other online businesses? Our main online business is The Secret Body Coach where I help women to feel healthy, look slim and be confident, without ever having to diet again. I also do some work as a freelance writer and blogger. Our other online business is called How To Travel With Kids. When we first started travelling we planned to keep a record of our travels on our blog for our friends, family and future-selves. But as time went on we started to get requests from people asking us to share not only where we were going, but how we managed the practicalities of travelling with kids too. That’s when How To Travel With Kids was born. We now create and share YouTube videos and blog posts with all the information you need to make the most of travelling with your kids, whether you’re doing a short family holiday or an around the world trip. You’ll find everything from country reports, location guides and excursion reviews to packing advice, planning hacks and money saving tips.” TO FIND OUT MORE GO TO  www.howtotravelwithkids.co.uk

An expert parent's opinion on keeping your children active through the half term holidayBURNING OFF ENERGY AT TRAMPOLINING

How important do you think it is to keep your children active during the school holidays? “Vitally important. When my children were both at school I always made sure that I booked them into a sports camp during the school holidays. They’re energetic boys who need to burn off their energy! It’s also great for them to stay active, improve their fitness levels and it’s good for their minds too. I like to know that they are learning new skills and experiencing new things as often as possible. Both the boys love sports and keeping fit and active. I highly recommend Flair to you as a mum if like me you would like to see your children learn new skills, reach their goals, grow in confidence and have a really fun time.”

Half Term Holiday Camp is taking place next week on 31st May – 2nd June @ Club Spectrum with a Trampolining Masterclass on Thursday 1st June also @ Club Spectrum in Guildford.
