What’s the secret behind the success of Tumble Camps?

Due to popular demand Holiday Tumble Camps have gone from a one week event at one club once a year to Tumble Camps during every school holiday at the majority of our gymnastics clubs in Surrey. Today I find out what Flair Founder & CEO Richard Dwyer thinks is the secret to the success of camps…

My name is Sophie and I am the Parent’s Champion. I am here to answer your questions and listen to your feedback. I love visiting the clubs and chatting to parents and the question that I have been asked the most recently is “How can I find out more about Flair founder Richard?” so here’s a quick Q & A with him.

If you would like your child to have a SUPER-FUN time next week during the school holidays please secure their place at Easter Tumble Camp. Easter Tumble Camp is taking place on 15th – 18th April @ Guildford Spectrum Leisure Complex AND
Trampolining Masterclasses on Tuesday 16th and Thursday 18th April @ Guildford Spectrum Leisure Complex

Richard Dwyer Flair Founder tell us What's the secret behind the success of our tumble camps?RICHARD DWYER (FLAIR FOUNDER & CEO)

Hello Richard. What is your role at Flair? “I am the Founder, CEO and driving force behind the company. I started Flair Gymnastics at Kenyngton Manor School in Sunbury (my primary school) in 1998 with a handful of students, a few floor mats and a vault. I was 21 years old and my mum used to coach with me. I am passionate about gymnastics coaching but more so the vital life skills that children learn through our gymnastics programmes.”

What do you like most about running the company? “The constant evolvement. There is always something new being added. Thoughts and ideas that I have are always being developed and put into action. It’s very exciting.”

What did you do before Flair? “I was the South East gymnastics champion and then I had a 20 year career as a professional stuntman for TV and film appearing in shows like Dr Who, 24 and Eastenders and films including Sherlock Holmes and  Harry Potter.”

What school did you go to? “Kenyngton Manor and Bishop Wand, both in Sunbury.”

What are your hobbies? “Travelling, aviation, theatre and reading business books!”

Did you do gymnastics as a child? “Yes, I started gymnastics when I was 4 and I still love to train. At the moment I have a rebounder in the living room and bounce every day!”

Do you have any siblings? “Yes a brother called Andrew. He’s 2 years older than me.”

Do you have any pets? “Yes I have a Siberian tabby cat called Belle. She is 5.”

What is your favourite sports related film that inspires you and why? “‘Eddie the Eagle.’ It’s a story of true grit. Against all the odds Eddie battles through and becomes the first competitor since 1929 to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping. Emotional viewing!”

Who is your favourite gymnast that inspires you and why? “Neil Thomas (he was the British champion when I was a kid so I looked up to him) and Lisa Elliot who was female British champion. I trained with her as a child and her work ethic and determination inspired me to always train hard in the gym. My current favourite is Amy Tinkler whose former coach is my good friend Nick Ruddock who works with us at Flair assisting with our Flair coaching university and coach development programme.”

What do you think is the secret to the success of our Tumble Camps? “When me and my brother Andrew were small we were two bundles of energy and my mum was only too pleased to take us to gymnastics camp for a few hours during the school holidays!  We needed to burn off all that energy and both myself and Andrew loved and still do love keeping fit. It’s so important to keep your children active. At Tumble Camp the children get the chance to try out gymnastics, trampolining and acro too so there’s no time to get bored and as each day has a different theme it really is a lot of fun. It’s all about keeping things fun and yes I would say that FUN is the secret of our success!”

If you would like your child to have a SUPER-FUN time during the school holidays please secure their place at next week’s Easter Tumble Camp and Trampolining Masterclasses.
